I’d had the chance to go out to the South Falls at Silver Falls State Park when I visited Oregon in 2006, but we didn’t hike down around the falls. So when we went in 2010, we decided to hike down the trail that takes you behind the waterfall, then around and back uphill to the parking lot.
^ The above shot is from the top of the trail, as you start to wind your way down hill. If you look closely you can see a little light blue speck about a quarter inch in from the left edge of the picture — that’s a person. Just gives you an idea of the scale.
^ This is after we’d passed behind the falls, looking back at the trail. The first picture had been taken near the trees at the top left corner in the above photo; the bright blue spot on the right side of the photo is another person. It’s a big, big waterfall.
We only had time that day to do the almost three mile hike around the South Falls, but someday I’ll go back and explore the entire trail that covers all ten waterfalls. If you have the chance to go, do so!
