MY RELATIONSHIP WITH PHOTOGRAPHY
First and foremost, I am absolutely in love with the magical, heartbreaking, breathtaking beauty in this world. It continues to amaze me that a little machine in the palm of my hand can make that magic last forever. My goal as a photographer is to preserve those moments and that beauty for my clients, for myself and for the world to enjoy.
My love affair with photography is long, dating back to my first disposable camera at the young age of six. As a child, I entered photos into school art contests. As a teen, my 35mm and I recorded and preserved events, trips, and everyday life on dozens of rolls of film, which my parents generously paid to have developed. In college, I graduated to a point-and-shoot digital camera, which made photography both more affordable and more practical.
In 2010, I purchased my first DSLR and began seriously pursuing photography as a hobby. I began taking photographs of friends and their families, of coworkers’ side projects, of company products, and of the world around me. In 2011, I was asked to join EatAroundOKC, a blog that reviewed restaurants in the Oklahoma City area, as a volunteer staff photographer. In 2012, I joined a group of photography enthusiasts; I later became the co-leader of that group. At the beginning of 2013, I officially established my own company, Nicole McDaniel Photography. At the end of 2013, other factors in my life resulted in my husband and I relocating from Oklahoma to Texas. This also meant closing my business, although I continue to pursue photography for my personal pleasure. As I’ve pursued photography for myself in 2014, I’ve changed my approach. In an effort to create intentional photographs (and to pare down the number of pictures I was taking), I have been exploring film photography with my dad’s old SLR. (No, I haven’t abandoned digital photography.)
My professional photography experience includes portrait, lifestyle, event, commercial, and food photography. All photographs on this website are owned fully by Nicole McDaniel and Nicole McDaniel Photography, LLC and may not be reproduced without expressed permission.
MY RELATIONSHIP WITH DESIGN
My interest in graphic design is not quite as long as my relationship with photography. After graduating from college, I landed a job at a stationery company, where I worked for three and a half years. During my time there, I picked up quite a few graphic design skills. I later utilized those skills working for a book publisher, creating book covers and layouts. While my current position does not focus solely on graphic design, I try to squeeze it in whenever possible and appropriate.
My graphic design experience includes designing stationery, email blasts, web images and ads, brand logos, brand communications, promotional flyers, banners, posters, book covers and layouts, album artwork, and websites. My goal as a designer is to convey the client’s message and image in a clean, professional, and eye-catching way.
I’m a 20-something married gal living in North Texas. I attended the University of Oklahoma, graduating from a wonderful liberal arts program with Honors. I spend my free time designing stationery (old habits die hard), reading, running, browsing graphic design trends, and sharpening my photography skills (which really means poring over equipment reviews, dreaming of new lenses, and browsing blogs of established photographers for inspiration and self-assigned challenges).
Then, I go out and take pictures. Lots and lots of pictures.
